Timeline Events That Fred will never forget:
1949 – I traveled many times with my mother on the trollies all over downtown Allentown.
1950 – To save money my mother and I would pay a penny to walk across the 8th St. Bridge so she could pay the bills in person. This would save on a 3 cent stamp to do it by mail.
1955 (Sept.) – Life goal; “artist” instilled by my wonderful 3rd grade teacher, Barbara Fitch Moyer. She encouraged me to draw. I used colored chalk and did seasonal illustrations on every blackboard in the room. Miss Fitch kept a small space 3 feet by 3 feet for instructional use. But my work dominated the room for the whole year.
1955 – I learned how to lay bricks as good as a pro by mixing cement and carefully observing my dad for hours & hours at the age of 8 and 9.
1956 – I hiked through “Ricketts Glen”, “Bake Oven Knob”, and “Glen Onoko”. I even struck boulders with a hammer to play chimes from rocks on the Appalachian Trail.
1957 – I took the “Bunny Trail” to climb to the top of “Hawk Mountain” I counted eagles and hawks crossing the mountain during migration in the fall.
1957 – My father drove me in his 1949 Chevy Pick-up to every art museum and natural history museum in the surrounding 150 miles. We would read every display. My teaching career was instilled and set in mind from here.
1958 – My brother Jim and I climbed to the top of the “Statue of Liberty” in 1958 and again in 1959.
1959 – I went swimming in the Lehigh River front park and the Lehigh Canal. I dove into the locks at the Hamilton Street Dam of the Lehigh River. I also swam in many old mine holes, Bath, Irorington, the Reservoir, Freedens, and many more.
1960 – I could do a double and a one and a half with a full twist and many tricks on the trampoline at the “Mountainville Trampoline Center”.
1961 – I raised 32 pigeons, built my own coop and flew my birds hundreds of miles preparing for long distance races. The flock was whipped out in a few days at the time of Allentown Fair by a hungry weasel.
1961 – I got a ½ day off from school to see the Candidate JFK driven down Hamilton Street before he became president.
1961 – I won $50 at Ag Hall by limbo dancing under the limbo bar set at 11”. They gave me an album and $50.00 cash.
1962 – I bought my first car a 1953 Studebaker for $25 and developed my Hot-Rod cartoon style, with air-brush, sketching, and memorizing cars.
1962 – I stood at the Washington D.C National Art Museum for 2 ½ hours then looked at the “Mona Lisa” for only 10 seconds while 2 marines stood guard. A layer of bullet proof glass protected the great work. Time restricted.
1963 – November 22, the afternoon art class a student yelled from the hall and into the classroom “The president was just shot!” Everybody stopped – the room went silent. The radio was turned on, kids started to cry.
1966 – Moved to New York, Lower East Side.
1967 – I used $2,000 of my wife’s scholarship then worked my way through art school and 2 colleges with my cartoons, sign paintings, art graphics, and illustrations.
1967 – I sat on a park bench at the free concert at “Tompkins Square Park” in the East Village. Richie Havens sang and played guitar to only about 35 people. Unknown nationally at that time.
1967 – At a movie theater near times square, i met and talked for a few minutes with “Salvador Dali”
1967 – I watched protesting college students burn their draft cards in front of St. Peters’ Church in the lower east side of Manhattan.
1967 – Spring, I listened from my apartment window, early one morning to “Jimi Hendrix” practice for hours from “Fillmore East” only a block away.
1968 – I was accepted at Cooper Union, Lehigh University, and Memphis Academy of Art for advanced studies after SVA. I did not attend for lack of proper transfer credits from SVA.
1968 – I never ever smoked marijuana, or took any kind of drugs. Inspirited teaching and encouragement of my wife Barbara Parker.
1969 – Hitch – Hiked to and from Kutztown State Teachers College (17 miles) with books wrapped in plastic bags and art projects in shopping bags for one year in all kinds of weather.
1970 – Looked at a large painting of the landing on the moon by “Norman Rockwell” at the Society of Illustrators Show in New York.
1971 – Lettered 2 “Indianapolis 500” Race Cars, but was into my studies for college I never saw my cars go around the track.
1973 – Eat lunch at the top of snow capped “Mount Hood” and looked at the Columbia River, Near Portland Oregon.
1974 – I won a free trip to Italy for acquiring the most new members to the Allentown Art Museum. I saw and even touched the Marble Edge of Michelangelo’s Pieta before it was damaged. 10 years later I saw the sculpture again, totally restored, protected by bullet proof glass box.
1974 – I saw the “Birth of Venus” by Botticelli at the Uffizi Museum at Florence.
1975 – Shook hands and talked with “Albert Shanker” president of my union. The American Federation of Teachers AFL – CIO.
1978 – I drank water from a public fountain in Rome. The water came from an Original Aqueduct made by the Romans 33 B.C.
1980 – I looked at ” Irises “, (the most valued painting at that time) , by Vincent Van Gogh, while visiting the Getty Museum, in California.
1981 – I jogged the length of the Island of Ocracoke, Outer Banks. I ran up the beach in powerful wind on the sand 17 miles.
1983 – I studied “Halley’s Comet” cross the sky with my daughter Amber from the top of South Mountain.
1987 – Made a visit to the great “Niagara Falls” and stood at the very spot of “Marilyn Monroe” in the movie “Niagara”
1993 – I visited the Isle of Capri in the Mediterranean.
1993 – I walk on the “Appian Way” and stepped into the “Pantheon” made with beautiful poured concrete 2.000 years ago.
1994 – I crossed the border and shopped for Folk Art and beads in Tijuana, Mexico.
2000 – Designed and drew the blueprints for the construction of my studio, home edition, and a 3 car garage.
2001 – February 24 I saw the shuttle “Discovery” make its final launch. I felt the power of the blast and the earth shake.
2011 – August 23 Nellie Delong, a good friend and I, were sitting on my stone steps and we felt the Earth move. 5.8 mag. Earthquake.
2012 – Tom Amichi gave me a $100 ticket to attend a “Motley Crew” concert. The drummer played upside down 15 feet above the stage, with a spectacular light show.
2017 – Pencils, paper, drawing, collage, crayons, and clay are still my favorite media.
2018 – When told “Go fly a kite” I did. I have a variety of kites in my collection. Standard, delta wing, airfoil, box and more. In array of colors and non-rip nylon.
2018 – I recently just redesigned a logo & T-shirt for “Active Electric
